    What is the difference between a Trademark Registration and a Patent?

    A registered trademark is a symbol that identifies a product or distinguishes a service. A patent, on the other hand, can be an invention or something involving a more innovative concept.

    Can individuals register a trademark?

    Yes! You do not need a company registration (CNPJ) to register a trademark.

    The main difference is the fee to be paid. Individuals pay a reduced fee, as do micro and small businesses. For medium and large companies the fee is higher.

    Does a CNPJ protect my trademark?

    A CNPJ does not guarantee trademark registration! That’s right, don’t confuse the two!

    The CNPJ is the legal entity! It is the legal registration of your company’s identity only at the state commercial registry, not of your trademark. In Brazil, trademarks are registered with a single body, INPI.

    Can I register my trademark with the logo?

    Yes! In the same application you can register the name (word mark) and the logo (figurative mark). The registration cost stays the same.
