What you need to know

Computer programs cannot be patented in Brazil. Protection comes from copyright, and registration is made at INPI by filing excerpts of the source code as a digital summary (hash), which keeps what was submitted confidential.

Registration does not create the right — it documents authorship, ownership and creation date. It is the practical evidence in disputes with former partners, contractors and competitors, and it is often required in investment rounds, due diligence and contracts with large clients. Legal protection lasts 50 years.
