Industrial design
Protection of the product’s shape: the external configuration, the ornamental set of lines and colours that sets your object apart.
What you need to know
Industrial design protects appearance, not function. It covers the ornamental plastic shape of an object or the ornamental set of lines and colours applicable to a product, as long as the visual result is new, original and industrially reproducible. Packaging, furniture, lamps, footwear, technical parts and graphical interfaces are typical objects.
It is the registration that stops a competitor from copying the shape of your product and selling it cheaper. The application depends on well-executed drawings or photographs, which define exactly what is protected. It lasts 10 years from filing, renewable for three periods of 5 years — up to 25 years in total. The grace period for prior disclosure is 180 days.
How it works
We check whether the configuration is new, original and registrable as an industrial design.
Drawings or photographs are organised to define the intended protection.
Application filed at INPI with the field of application defined.
Once granted, the unit tracks the renewal deadlines up to the legal limit.
