Geographical indication
INPI recognition that a product or service comes from a specific place — and only those from there may use the name.
What you need to know
A geographical indication does not belong to a company: it belongs to the producers of a region. There are two kinds. The indication of source identifies a place that became known as a centre of production, extraction or manufacture. The designation of origin requires more: that the product’s qualities be due to the geographical environment, including natural and human factors.
The application is filed by a collective entity representing the producers — an association, union or cooperative — and depends on a book of technical specifications, rules of use and a control structure. It is a collective project, with a longer timeline than a trademark registration, and a direct effect on the product’s value on the shelf and on access to foreign markets.
